At last, I have been able to catch up on a few of those jobs that I have needed to do for ages, but was too busy to find five minutes! The most exciting of these jobs was sorting out our new window display pictures, which have been printed by the lovely people at John E Wright in Derby. Soon to be unveiled!

Steve has had the studio lights out with him on location this week, so I’ve been busy getting orders out to clients and editing from the weekend, including photography from a wedding vow renewal ceremony with a really lovely family in Mickleover, Derby, on Saturday. And there are two gigantic canvas prints from family portrait sessions, all cosy in their bubble wrap, waiting to be collected as I write.

On the PR and commercial photography front, Steve has certainly clocked up the miles this week, starting with a two-day shoot in Cumbria. Lots of people think that being a photographer is quite glamorous and, while it does (occasionally) have its moments, sometimes even less exciting things need photographing – an ingenious new type of plasterboard in this case!

After a flying visit to Derby and Birmingham to photograph an NHS training event, he then headed off down to Essex where he was booked to provide corporate awards night photography. He has also seen the launch of a new eco-house this week as well as various client meetings about upcoming projects.

We’ve got another busy weekend ahead, with appointments and viewings in the studio – including a Smash the Cake photoshoot for a little girl’s first birthday, which I’m extremely excited about! Pics to follow soon…

pet photography derby

Well, it’s been a very hectic few weeks for us, both in the studio and out and about with PR and commercial photography, so I’ve not had many spare minutes for blogging or social media updates – we’ve been too busy keeping our clients happy!

So, I’ve put together a little round-up of the last week’s activities. In the studio, I’ve been busy editing shoots, showing people their images and sending off orders for printing and framing – including three framed pictures of labradoodle Louis. He has just had the second of three pet photography photoshoots with us as a record of his growth from a small puppy.

And he wasn’t the only adorable pooch to be in front of our cameras recently, little Ned and his mummy/owner Sam had been in a couple of weeks back for a birthday photoshoot for Sam. She came in this week to view her pictures and choose her prints, which she was really happy with.

In between all of that, it is a really busy time of year for passport photos. We are getting lots of people asking us for passport photos of babies, as it is so much easier than trying to squeeze into a booth. And at £7.50, it is an ideal, hassle-free solution for parents booking holidays – even if I am slightly jealous after hearing all their exciting plans!

I also uploaded some family portrait photography to the client page of our website, and received a lovely email back.”Thank you so much, they really are amazing! I know my sister is going to be spoilt for choice. Thank you again, they had so much fun on the day and the photos are perfect!”

On the PR photography front, Steve has been driving all over the country on various shoots. He photographed some birds of prey which were on display at the opening of a new show-home in Leicestershire, before heading to Milton Keynes for some corporate headshot portraits. Also in his diary this week was the start of building work on a brand new nursery in Telford, a lady off on a charity walk in Shrewsbury, and some artificial grass in Staffordshire.

Steve was also commissioned to provide photography for a case study in Shepshed, Nottingham conference photography and awards night photography in the West Midlands. And he managed to squeeze in photography of the managing director of Ford UK on a visit to Nottingham and an artist visiting a school in Leicestershire.

Coming up this weekend and next week, we’re photographing a wedding vow renewal ceremony and reception tomorrow, followed by family portrait photography appointments in the studio on Sunday. Steve will be continuing his photography tour of Britain with bookings in Cumbria, Essex and Birmingham!

smash the cake photoshoot derby

I had been looking forward to this shoot for weeks, so a couple of Saturdays ago I couldn’t wait to get stuck in on The Studio’s very first Smash the Cake shoot with one-year-old Amy at the studio in Mickleover, Derby!

If you haven’t heard of a baby cake smash photoshoot before, it is a brilliant new way to mark your little one’s first birthday, although I think it would work just as well for two and three-year-olds too. It basically involves a gorgeously gooey cake – ours was made by the very clever Emma at Milly May’s Coffee Shop in Mickleover, Derby – and a small person let loose to smash, bash and mash away!  I was happily clicking away as little Amy got stuck in.

Amy is a darling little person and very delicately picked the small spots of icing off first, taking it all in and eyeing up the cake from the sidelines. Gradually, with a bit of help from a handy Upsy Daisy figure and a wooden spoon, she managed to mulch up the cake into a pile of goo and crumbs perfectly.

A few baby wipes later, and the mess was sorted – and I cannot wait for the next time!! The only problem was, the shoot was so hard to edit down – I couldn’t choose, so I’ve just posted loads of pictures!

With the Fabulous Places Christmas Market at the Roundhouse in Derby just around the corner, we thought we needed to get into the festive photography spirit in The Studio. Then, thanks to Leah from Your Wedding Angel, along came tiny little baby Cassius.

We photographed him a few days after his due date, although he had put in a surprise appearance four weeks earlier. He really was a beautiful bundle of cuteness and hardly made a squeak the whole time he was in the studio.

Now to choose which photograph to use on our Christmas Market stand! If you’d like more information about baby portrait photography in Derby, take a look at our website, like us on Facebook or call us on 01332 523523 for more information.

Studio portraits and photography on location

The days of brown speckled backgrounds in photography are long gone, thank goodness! The big decision in portrait photography now is whether to go for studio portraits with a plain background or portraits on location.

At The Studio, most of our portraits are done inside on a background with studio lighting. We have a white background roll and a black one, which looks fabulous in black and white images. We also go out on location if that’s what a client would like. There are pros and cons for both styles of work, but in the end it comes down to personal preference.

One of the advantages of studio portraits is that it is not weather-dependent. It could be torrential rain and a howling gale outside, but the studio is always warm and dry, which is a bonus in the run-up to Christmas, which is a busy time of year. It may seem intimidating walking onto a background paper to face the camera, but we’re experts at putting people at ease and helping them to relax and be themselves. There is plenty of time for little ones to settle in and make themselves at home – lots of children end up loving all the attention and enjoy performing for the camera!

If you can’t decide what to wear, or want to change outfits, that’s no problem in the studio. You can also bring toys and props to personalise your portraits as much as you like.  Our studio portraits have a very fresh, clean contemporary look to them and a timeless quality that won’t age, even as your children grow. Our mounted prints start at £20, which makes them great presents too.

Portraits on location can be great too, though. It just depends on what you’re after. We are happy to arrange shoots on location, either at your home or other suitable venues in Derbyshire, such as a park or in the countryside.

Get in touch to discuss your requirements and we’ll go from there!
